North Nampa is the side of I-84 that grew fastest. From Davis Ave the truck crosses the freeway at Franklin or Garrity and works the subdivisions off Cherry Ln, Ustick Rd and Can-Ada Rd, the streets back of the Ford Idaho Center, and the houses around St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus where a lot of nurses and techs keep odd hours. Most kitchens here came with a builder package, so the refrigerator is a Whirlpool, GE or Frigidaire French-door unit from somewhere between 2015 and 2025, and the three-car garage usually holds a second one bought used. City water is hard, and the softener is standard, which matters for the ice side more than the cold side.
What fails here follows the calendar. In July and August the garage refrigerator sits in 100-degree air with its condenser coil packed in dust off the fields and cottonwood fluff off the canal trees, and it runs until the compressor overheats. An Idaho Power brownout during a thunderstorm can scramble an inverter compressor and kill a control board. In December the same garage drops to 35 degrees, the thermostat never calls for cooling, and the freezer half thaws while the fresh side stays fine. Inside the house the builder French-door units mostly bring defrost trouble: a heater or thermostat quits, the evaporator ices into a block, the freezer keeps freezing and the fresh side goes warm.
Cold is being made in the freezer but not getting up to the upper box. Most often the defrost circuit, heater or thermostat, gave out and the evaporator has grown into one block of ice; sometimes the evaporator fan has died. Off comes the back panel, heater and fan get metered, and whichever reads open gets replaced.
A compressor that never cycles off is usually fighting a clogged condenser coil or a dead condenser fan, and in a Garrity-side garage in August that is the call we get more than any other. If the coil is clean and the fan turns, we check the charge and the compressor itself before anyone talks about replacement.
Relay and overload at the compressor are trying to start it and failing. Now and then the relay alone is at fault and the fix is small. Sometimes the compressor windings read wrong on the meter, and then you get a plain number for a compressor, or a plain word that the box is not worth it.
Warm, damp air is getting in or the defrost cycle has stopped. We check the door gasket with a strip of paper, look at the hinge on the freezer drawer, and test the defrost heater and control. A gasket on a Frigidaire bottom-freezer from a Cherry Ln build is a same-visit job.
A plugged defrost drain is sending meltwater the wrong way. In hard-water houses the drain trough scales up, in others a piece of food blocks it. We clear the drain to the pan, warm it out if it has frozen, and check that the heater is cycling so it does not refill with ice.
In a January inversion the garage sits near 35 degrees and a standard refrigerator thinks it is cold enough. The compressor stays off and the freezer thaws. A garage kit that tricks the thermostat suits some models; others simply need a warmer spot. You hear which applies before any money goes to parts.
The diagnosis starts with numbers. The technician reads the shelf temperature in both boxes, listens for the evaporator fan, and clamps a meter on the compressor to learn whether it draws normal current, starts and stalls, or draws nothing. Then the back panel comes off. A defrost heater is metered for resistance, a thermostat is checked for continuity cold, the condenser fan is watched under load. Sealed-system problems show up as a frost pattern on the evaporator and a compressor that runs cool. None of this is a guess from the doorway. When the broken part has a name you could pass on to a neighbor, the price goes down in writing as one figure, $99 included.
