The older Duet and Cabrio machines in the 1970s houses along Karcher Rd and Midway Rd have tumbled since the second owner moved in; the newer top-load pairs came with the builder packages in the subdivisions off Ustick Rd, Middleton Rd and Deer Flat Rd. Both report faults with an F number for the electronics and sensors, or a letter pair like AF, PF or L2 for airflow, power and voltage. Maytag and Amana machines use the same list. The code says which reading tripped. Whether the cause is a thermistor, a stuck key, a lost breaker leg or a duct full of lint takes a meter and a walk to the hood outside.
The valley gives these dryers a workout. Dust from the onion fields toward Parma and the feedlots south of Melba comes in on jeans and rides the exhaust until the duct behind the wall is half its size, and AF posts on a dryer with a good element and a bad vent. Windy afternoons blow the exhaust flap shut on the west side of a house in West Nampa. A commuter who starts the dryer before leaving for Boise finds PF on the panel after a storm knocked the power off for a minute. And an electric Whirlpool posting L2 in a Star garage is usually running on one leg of its 240-volt feed after a breaker half-tripped.

We pull the stored codes from the board with the key sequence for the model and write them down in order, because a PF followed by an F01 says surge, while an F22 logged for a month says sensor. Then we clear them and run the dryer through its service test, which cycles the motor, heater and sensors one at a time while we watch. A heat or airflow code sends us outside to the hood with the dryer running, since most of the AF and F30 calls between Nampa and Parma are a duct problem wearing a sensor’s name. After that the meter goes on the part the code names: the thermistor against its chart, the element for resistance, both legs of the feed under load.

Should your dryer still be young enough for Whirlpool’s own coverage to apply, we say so before the $99 is spent and you decide. The truck stocks thermistors, thermal fuses, high-limit thermostats, heating elements, belts, rollers, idlers and cords for the Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana models that fill this county, which is why the bulk of these repairs finish on the first visit. Boards and gas valve assemblies are ordered and fitted on a second trip that is already inside the number you approved. Usually the vent. AF means the dryer cannot move enough air, and in the 1970s houses along Karcher Rd the duct often takes a long route beneath the floor and has never been cleaned. We take an airflow reading at the hood outside and check the blower wheel. If the dryer moves air fine with the flex hose off, the duct is the job, not the machine.
The heater is only getting part of its voltage. A 240-volt dryer runs on two legs, and if one is missing the drum turns but nothing heats. Check the double breaker for a half-tripped pair once. If it trips again, leave it off and call; a burned terminal at the outlet or cord is common and we meter both legs under load.
PF only records that power dropped while the dryer was running, and on the rural lines around Melba a summer storm does that regularly. Press start and the cycle resumes. It is a repair only when PF appears on a calm day, which points at a loose cord, a tired breaker or a board relay, and that is what we test.
Cutting the power at the breaker for two minutes clears the display on most models. Whether the code stays gone depends on the cause: a stuck key or a storm surge usually does; a thermistor, moisture sensor or airflow code is back before the second load finishes. When it returns, a meter finds the part for $99, counted inside the repair if you approve one.
