South of the shop the washer calls split by water. Inside the Greenhurst Rd and Southside Blvd subdivisions the houses run on city water through a softener, and the washers are the top-load Whirlpools and front-load Samsungs and LGs that came with the house or from the store on Garrity. Once the truck gets past Lake Lowell Ave and down 12th Ave Rd toward the refuge, the houses sit on private wells. The wells here run hard, usually with iron and a bit of sand in the mix, and the washer is the machine that shows it first: orange lines in the whites, screens packed with grit, a valve that never quite closes.
The failures follow. Inlet valves scale up and stick, so a machine fills for half an hour or keeps filling with the power off. Drain pumps on the acreage swallow more than socks; they take hay, twine and gravel out of work clothes. In the subdivisions the front-loaders that have been leveled on a laminate floor for ten years start walking and the shocks are the reason. When a farmhouse washer quits mid-cycle with the tub full and a barn coat in it, nine times out of ten the answer is a pump and a filter, not a board. Long driveways and gates are normal, and the request form has a line for the code.
On the acreage the drain pump is packed with what came off the barn: hay, gravel, a bale string. In the subdivisions it is more often a sock, or a pump motor that quit. The housing comes open, gets cleared, the pump gets a reading, and the hose behind the machine gets checked for a kink.

That is the water, not the washer, most of the time. Iron in a well comes through as staining. We check the valve and the tub for rust before saying so, and if the softener is empty or the iron filter is bypassed we point at it. No part is sold for a water problem.
Suspension rods on top-loaders, shocks and struts on front-loaders, or a drum bearing that has lost its seal to the water. We rock the drum, check each rod or shock, and level the machine. A bearing job on an older front-loader gets a plain number so you can weigh it against the machine’s age.
The lock is stuck, the lock switch reads open, or the control saw an unbalance and stopped. The stored code gets read, the lock gets a reading, and the lid strike gets tested. On the Whirlpool top-loaders common in the Greenhurst subdivisions the shift actuator throws the same symptom, so it gets metered too.
A split inlet hose, a valve body cracked by scale, or the door boot on a front-load machine. With the panel off and the cycle running we find the source, instead of guessing from the puddle. Rubber hoses more than five years old on a well get pointed out before they let go.
Diagnosis begins with a running machine. The technician starts a cycle with the front or the console open and watches where it stops. A stop at fill means the inlet valve gets metered and the screens get pulled to see the scale. If it stops at drain, the pump housing is opened and cleared and the pump motor read. If it stops at spin, the lid lock, the motor, the belt and the control are checked in that order. Fault codes stored in the control are written down before they are cleared. On a well-water washer the screens and the valve seat are inspected even if the complaint was something else, because they explain half the return calls.
GE, Whirlpool and Maytag, LG and Samsung, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux and Amana all come through regularly, and Speed Queen especially out on the acreage where people buy for the long haul. The lake houses and the farm-labor housing off Lake Lowell Ave are handled by text with the owner: the owner answers the written number by text, then gets photo, invoice and warranty in a single email. Same-week windows are normal, often next day, with the first stop kept for people who commute north to Boise. The washer repair gets its figure only once the diagnosis is done, and that figure, $99 included, goes on paper. If the repair is not worth doing, $99 closes it out.
It wears out the inlet valve and the pump ahead of schedule. Scale and iron plug the screens, and sand wears the valve seat until it drips. The rest of the washer is indifferent to it. Cleaning the screens each spring and keeping the softener or iron filter running gets most of it back.
Low flow at the valve. The screens inside the inlet fittings are packed with scale or grit, or one solenoid has failed and only the cold or hot side is feeding. Both are checked with the hoses off and the meter on the valve. Low pressure from the well pump gets named as the cause rather than a valve sold.
Yes, and often. They are common on the farms south of town and around Melba, and they are simple machines: belt, transmission, pump, valve, timer or control. The truck stocks parts for the popular models. A Speed Queen that quit spinning usually wants a belt or a lid switch, fixed while the truck is there.
Do not bail it yet. Leave it, note what was in the load, and tell dispatch. The technician drains it through the pump housing, clears whatever came off the coat, meters the pump, and runs a cycle. A coat’s worth of hay and twine is the most common drain call from the acreage.
It is. The diagnostic is $99 whether the washer is on Southside Blvd or a gravel road by the refuge, and the invoice has no line for miles driven. Approve the repair and the written number already carries the $99. Decline it, and the $99 settles the visit.
